PayPal ‘makes’ buyer destroy $2500 antique violin

Paypal sellers be warned. Paypal might cost you your precious items as well as money according to a sad story of an antique violin seller.

PayPal reportedly made a buyer of an antique French violin destroy the instrument instead of shipping it back to the seller, due to a dispute over the instrument’s providence.

The seller —identified only as “Erica”— wrote of her “heartbreaking” experience, which was posted on the Regretsy.com website.

“Rather than have the violin returned to me, PayPal made the buyer DESTROY the violin in order to get his money back. They somehow deemed the violin as ‘counterfeit’ even though there is no such thing in the violin world,” she said.

“The buyer was proud of himself, so he sent me a photo of the destroyed violin,” she added.

She said she sold the old French violin to the buyer in Canada, and the buyer disputed the label.

But she said that such disputes are “not uncommon”, as labels found inside violins are not permanent and are therefore not a major factor when evaluating the providence and value of an instrument.

Erica noted that some of the most expensive violins in the world have disputed labels, “but they are works of art nonetheless.”

“I am now out a violin that made it through World War II as well as $2500. This is of course, upsetting. But my main goal in writing to you is to prevent PayPal from ordering the destruction of violins and other antiquities that they know nothing about,” she said.

“It is beyond me why PayPal simply didn’t have the violin returned to me,” she added.

Erica said she spoke on the phone to numerous reps from PayPal who “100% defended their action and gave me the party line.”

She also noted the violin was examined and authenticated by a top luthier prior to its sale.

Presently, PayPal’s terms say it “may also require you to destroy the item and to provide evidence of its destruction.”

Weird Dream

Last night i had a dream. I was to go on a flight with a friend somewhere. The flight was early morning so we had to be there at night. We need some place to rest so my friend went to the hotel. I looked for transients and i saw a sign looking for one. I entered the house. I was entertained by the mother. The house is messy. The father is lying on the floor sick. A child is sleeping on the small bed with cuddling his stuff toy. The mother pickup some litters and tried her best for the house to be as presentable as possible. I regret i have already handled my 500 pesos to her. I thought i deserved better so i am starting to decide to withdraw and look for a better place but i heard say to her child, “may pagkain na tayu. gising ka na magluluto ako may pera na tayo” (wake-up, we can buy food now). She fixed the bed and said i will sleep there. My heart is filled with compassion but i am too tired and sleepy. I decided to sleep on the bed.

Too Many Briefs!

Are there too many briefs on billboards along EDSA? Gone were the days when billboards of beautiful and sexy women on lingerie decorates the polluted air of EDSA. Feminists succeeded to bring down those billboards that are said to be “demeaning” to women. Now the trends are sexy men on skimpy briefs showing contours of the male form. This billboards aims to cater to the taste of girls and gays and to sell underwear.
Are men becoming the new sex objects? If we celebrate the proliferation of billboards depicting athletes in all their underwear glory, we might be branded as perverts. We are indeed patronizing soft porn.
For me, I do think billboards along EDSA and other major highways are already too intrusive due to their size. I do not know how our girls feel when looking on those scaled up body down to those big bulges. It is time for the advertising community to stop making money at the expense of social degradation and sexual exploitation. Our highways and skylines are supposed to be for General Patronage and not R18

A Vulture’s Meal

A Sudanese toddler struggling to crawl to a feeding center: weak, starving and dying. Despite all that, she has the will to go on and there is a vulture nearby, ready to feed on her weakened flesh and someone nearby is adjusting his lens to capture a rare photo that won a Pulitzer Prize.
The St. Petersburg Times in Florida said this of Kevin Carter, the one who took the above photo: “The man adjusting his lens to take just the right frame of her suffering, might just as well be a predator, another vulture on the scene.” The photograph was sold to The New York Times where it appeared for the first time on March 26, 1993. Practically overnight hundreds of people contacted the newspaper to ask whether the child had survived.
Nobody knows what happened to the child, who crawled his way to a United Nations food camp.
